History of the Micronational Free Press

The Micronational Free Press was initially founded by Liam Sinclair to serve as the local news service for the Colony of Tebec, a subdivision within the micronation of the Republic of Amerada. It was founded in the latter part of October 2001 as the Los Antréal Times-Journal and retained that name until March 2002. The Micronational Free Press title was bourn out of a need for the paper to appeal to the wider intermicronational community, not just the Republic of Amerada.

Like many upstart journalists without any real experience, the bias and lack of experience of Sinclair is very evident in his early stories, especially those aimed at Amerada President Earl Washburn, a political opponent of Sinclair.

The Micronational Free Press operated in a weekly publication routine for the majority of its printing, though in early 2003 it became the first micronational news service in the Anglophone Sector to pioneer the micronational news blog format, a format later popularized by the Cyberian Broadcasting Cooperative in 2004. In its blog format, the Micronational Free Press Newswire provided more frequent daily news updates to its readers until cessation of publication in the summer of 2003.

The Micronational Free Press also provided an Attera-focused service through the MFP Atteran Star, which was acquired from AtterConn on July 7, 2002. This gave the Press a unique standing as Attera’s official news service that would eventually grow into the award-winning Atteran Chronicle World news service.

The Micronational Free Press would become dormant in as Mr. Sinclair decided to invest the majority of his micronational news reporting time into the creation of the Atteran Chronicle World, the second major micronational news endeavour of Mr. Sinclair (and a micronational community award winning publication).

Economic Simulation

Tebec Government Press Release 20030824

24 August 2003

In the latter part of 2002, the Tebec Government worked very hard on an economic simulation that would bring the simulated population into the “mix”. Efforts on the economic simulation were delayed in 2003 due to various other obligations which required attention. Today, the Premier’s Office has ordered the formal abandonment of those efforts as Tebec prepares to do away completely with the simulated population concept which we inherited during our time as a colony of Amerada. Approximately sixty or more pages of information offline pertaining to the development of the economic simulation will be transferred to electronic files as time permits and added to the National Library.

At this time, the Government has no plans to restart consideration of an economic system for the Commonwealth, and as such, by order of the Premier, the Ministry of Finance has been disbanded until such a time there is a demand for the resumption of economic services within the Commonwealth. Any questions can be directed to the Premier’s Office.

Tentative Agreement in place to hand control of Skyline back to Alexander

Last week, Politikan President Silby seized control of the Apollo Skyline’s main website from its owner, and longtime micronational media guru, Scott Alexander. The seizure of the Skyline proved to be a major mistake by Silby as it gave his enemies lots of fire power to discredit the recent leaps and bounds Politika has made in fixing its intermicronational reputation. However, Silby did guarantee that he would return the Skyline to Alexander in due time and that the site’s archives would not be deleted, even though he was tempted to delete the site for publishing what he considered inaccurate stories about his and Politika’s activities. The transfer of the Skyline’s main site to the control of its rightful owner will be complete in approximately 48 hours.

President Silby said that his seizure of the Skyline was a good thing for the micronational world, citing that it caused the so-called Radio Free Skyline (under the control of Alexander), to double its activity and that at no time did he plan to destroy the Skyline, as “reducing the number of independent [media] outlets would be highly contradictory [to combating the lack of media alternatives].”

Solomonic Empire of Attera, June 27/2003

After returning home from his deployment to the Iraq War earlier this month, L’eul Ras Harmagedon has officially returned to his duties in Attera, and has been reappointed as the nation’s Minister of Defence. Harmagedon was also appointed to the Grand Executive Council to represent his Imperial Region, Makonnia, in the legislative house.

Kingdom of Babkha, June 29/2003

For the second time in these many months, outspoken Babkhan Vizier of Home Affairs Baharm Gul Khuramdin has resigned all his public positions within the Kingdom. Khuramdin citied real life issues, mainly his ongoing studies, as the main reason for the resignation.

Amerada reconstruction discussions underway

Plagued by inactivity since March 2003, the Republic of Amerada has come back to life, somewhat, as discussions about reconstructing Amerada’s infrastructure from scratch begin to be taken seriously by the Amerada leadership. President Nicholas Bridgewater announced his intent to carry out a proposal by Liam Sinclair to reduce the number of administrative divisions in Amerada from thirteen to just three. The Amerada national map will be redrawn to feature one capital district and two provinces. The reasoning for this reduction as cited in Sinclair’s proposal is to reduce the big government that has caused Amerada severe inactivity as there have been so many government positions to fill that there is usually only one person per colony. The Amerada Senate would be reduced to three seats, one per administrative division.

Further discussion on major reforms in Amerada has focused around a considerable reduction in the size of the House of Common Representatives, and the terms in office for the Prime Minister (currently at 12 months) and the President (currently at no more than 48 months). All reforms are directed at reducing big government and the lack of opposition as it currently exists. It is believed that shorter terms and fewer positions will provide for a more competitive atmosphere, returning Amerada to the intense political atmosphere it had in late 2001 and in 2002. That intense political debate served to improve the country, and it is hoped that it will do so again.

The recent bout of activity that Amerada has received is also accredited to its founder, and perhaps most famous citizen, Earl Washburn. Washburn left Amerada back in March as he was about to be impeached and thrown out of the country after leading two revolutions against the government, the last attempt forcing the government to move to a new Ezboard where Washburn did not have EzOp powers. Washburn has offered to let Amerada use the old Ezboard again, however, any move is unlikely unless Washburn either transfers his EzOp powers to the President, or signs a legally binding agreement to not abuse the powers he has as EzOp.

News Briefs: 22 Jun 2003

June 21/2003 – Kingdom of Babkha
Today at the Raspur Conference, the Collective Unconscious announced its withdrawal from the project and the Alternate Realities world map as the leadership of that organization decided to move it out of the micronational scene. The Raspur Conference, which is designed to produce a new intermicronational organization between nations with similar goals, such as Attera, Babkha, and Aerlig, to name just a few, received a major blow on June 12/2003 when the Kingdom of Hanover withdrew from the conference. Hanover’s previous government, under Robert Gresham, supported the conference, however, that support has all but dried up since Kieran Bennett became Prime Minister. Long time supporter of the project, Hanoverian Thomas Cutterham, plans to continue on in the discussions as an independent party.

June 22/2003 – Kingdom of Hanover
Robert Gresham has filed a motion in the High Court to have the Hanoverian Private Bank shut down. The bank came into operation after the crash of the server containing Hanover’s national bank. Gresham, along with other Hanoverians, are concerned of the lack of accountability of the actions of the private bank and that it is using an “illegal” currency, the Talon, which the bank pegs 1:1 to Hanover’s currency, the Talen. The motion in court also accuses the private bank of attempting to deceive the public by making it look like it has the support of Hanover’s government by using a name similar to the Talen and using a 1:1 exchange rate.

Skyline seized, Politikan President claims Responsibility

One of the leading micronational newspapers, the Apollo Skyline, has been attacked, or more rightfully put, stolen, by the Republic of Politika today. The Skyline, which has been attempting to make a comeback to regular publishing over the past month, was hacked by Politika’s President Bob Silby who endeavoured to place the Skyline’s main publication site under the control of the Politikan government.

According to Skyline owner and chief editor Scott Alexander, Silby hacked the website of the Skyline because “he thought it would be fun” and that in the process, enough passwords were altered to prevent the Skyline staff from being able to easily regain control of the website.

Silby was able to gain control of the website via former co-editor Tom Blake, a Politikan, who had the password to the site. Blake has been very angry at several parties for accusations stemming from Archetype the 23rd, a citizen of Menelmacar, regarding accusations made in a recent issue of the Skyline about the activity level in Menelmacar.
